I am motivated by building and learning. There is no better feeling than the satisfaction of successfully finish a project, or learning and using a new skill. That is why I became an engineer! Right now I am studying in France, and next year I will study in Japan. My current hobby is building and flying drones, with my most recent design being a long-range drone for capturing video footage flying up into mountains. I am looking to improve my French speaking as well, something I hope immersion will help with greatly during my Workaway!

Primarily, I am looking to improve my French. My written skills are alright, but I come from a place where nearly the only language encountered is English, so I am in dire need of spoken French experience! I am a native English speaker, and I have strong English grammar and writings skills due to a few rigorous classes. Though I am mostly interested in learning French and doing hands-on work, I am open to helping teach English. And I would be interested in trying Japanese or another language!

I am American electrical engineer who specializes in Controls and Robotics. Meaning, I enjoy hands-on work building things as well as programming in case I can help automate or turn something into a smart device. In case you have kids, I can help teach math, science, and English, and I can help with renovation projects. Engineers are not necessarily smart -- we just know how to solve problems. That means we can learn and apply new skills and ideas, something I hope to do while working with you!

Ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons? I know, super nerdy, right? Well, you are correct! But, if you are open-minded and willing to try, I would love to teach you and anyone else how to play! If you haven't heard of it, It is a game where you create an imaginary story of heroes going out on exciting adventures! You can be a knight in armor, an archer slinging arrows, or even a wizard throwing magical fire, Since everything in the game exists in the mind's eye, is determined by dice, and is recorded on paper, you can do just about anything. Sitting down with friends to tell our own little story of adventure has led to some of my favorite memories and strongest friendships, and I would love to share the bonding experience with you!

This was an amazing experience, 10/10 and my first workaway.

I stayed with them for about 2 weeks during the hot part of Summer, and mostly spent time with Hassan and Ibrahim, 2 of the 4 brothers. An average day for me consisted of waking up to the sunshine after sleeping on the roof, then having some breakfast. From there, we would fetch water… read more and begin the day's work. For me, the most common work was renovating the central garden's mud walls for a couple hours, or until the heat became too much. You only work as much as you are able, and you do not have to push yourself. The work changes as the overall project is renovating the Kasbah so it can be used to house tourists. Then, we would get out of the Sun and take a rest until lunch. After lunch, we would rest for a couple more hours, fetch water, and then spend time with whomever was around. Until a late dinner and back to the roof for the night.

The brother's speak multiple different languages, so it was not uncommon to have a conversation that flowed between Arabic, Berber, English, Spanish, French, and Italian depending on the people present and who could translate for others. Everyone shares their own language, so you will learn a bit from everyone. It was fun to laugh and joke around with these people, and let us not forget the daily game or two of Parcheez!

The hosts were accommodating and could pick up things from the nearby town of Tagounite if needed, and the town felt quite safe unlike Marrakech or the bigger cities where people hassle foreigners. There is a real sense of community. I arrived late at night in Tagounite, and without wifi I was unsure exactly where to walk to find Hassan picking me up. The first person I talked to knew him, called him up, and the next thing I knew I was on the back of a motorcycle zipping to the Kasbah! It was also not uncommon to make a few local friends besides the hosts!

Early on in my stay we took a trip to see the dunes, and do all of the fun excursion stuff. I was glad to see that the people leading the excursion as well as the hosts seemed to really enjoy the trip themselves; it was not just something they were doing for the tourists. Rather, it was an event they enjoy participating in just as much. They also told me if you go closer to October after the heat settles, the excursions can last longer, and overall it *could* be a more enjoyable stay due to not having to deal with extreme heat. I personally decided to come during this time as a bit of a challenge, so please consider what you are looking for!

A few things to note: the environment is harsh, but with planning it can be managed, and you get used to it. Tee days usually reached 117F/47C and the nights began to feel cool at 100F/38C.

Myself (and the other workawayers) paid about 5 USD/Euro a day to help with food as it is COVID times, as renovating the Kasbah does not really generate money.

This is afterall a dirt/mud house, so you might not have the normal American/European amenities. If you are used to city life, keep that in mind. That said, it still felt like any regular home. It has electricity, sometimes limited wifi (usually depending on wind/sand blocking signal), and you could wash up whenever you wanted. I guess that life here takes a bit more presence of mind in that you have to live with a bit more intent as opposed to things just being available.

Drink water! You will need it. I brought a filter as well as some purifying tablets. The filter was good to consistently sip on in short term while the tablets take their time to purify, but the filter is impractical for bulk hydration. Having both was essential. I will also say, the other workawayers that happened to be there just drank the water itself. One was fine, and the other two told me that they felt only moderately ill for a few days, then of course they had nothing to worry about later. Something to consider!

Overall, wonderful and helpful people that mostly look for other good people with good ambience to share time with. If you can bring a positive attitude, well, that's about all you need for this!
